I often see RACI matrices and Responsibility Assignment Matrices (RAM) used in governance, but I’m not sure how they differ. When should I use one over the other in project management?

Both RACI and RAM help to identify roles; however, they serve different purposes.

• RACI Matrix (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed)

  • Determines who is conducting the work (Responsible), who approves (Accountable), who provides input (Consulted), and who is kept informed (Informed).

  • Helps to avoid decision-making ambiguity.

• Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM)

  • Used to clarify resource-level roles.

  • Focuses on who is assigned to which work package in the WBS.

  • Ensures proper resource allocation throughout the project.

While RACI explains decision-making authority, RAM ensures that work is assigned appropriately among team members.
