The RACI matrix is a basic but powerful project management tool that clearly defines the roles and responsibilities of multiple stakeholders for each Task, deliverable, or decision point during the project execution phase. This clarity helps to eliminate ambiguity, reduce uncertainty, and encourage accountability among project team members and other stakeholders involved.

  • Responsible (R): This designation recognizes persons or teams who are directly responsible for carrying out the work required to fulfill a certain task or produce a deliverable. One or more people may be allocated the responsibility for a specific action. This ensures that everyone understands who is responsible for completing the appropriate steps.
  • Accountable (A): Only one person can be designated as accountable for each task or deliverable. This individual is the one who is ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the work. While they may delegate the work to those who are responsible, they retain accountability.
  • Consulted (C): These are stakeholders who need to be consulted before a task is performed or a deliverable is completed. They typically provide information, advice, or expertise necessary for the task. This ensures that decisions and actions are informed by relevant knowledge and perspectives.
  • Informed (I): These are stakeholders who need to be kept up-to-date on the progress or completion of a task or deliverable. They do not need to be actively involved in the work but need to be aware of the outcomes. This ensures that all relevant parties are informed about the project's status.

By clearly outlining these roles for each project activity, the RACI matrix helps to avoid confusion about who does what, who is in charge, who needs to provide input, and who needs to be informed. This leads to more efficient project execution, better communication, and increased accountability across the project team and stakeholders.
